My Color Box - Winter 2012

For the 2012 winter collection, as an inspiration,I chose "My Color Box". I wanted to characterize the selection of colors as dominant and bright colors, with soft edges; like a used watercolors box. I wanted the petal flowers to look like color is poured to another color, color is mixed with color, color smearing into another color, something that's remind me the acrylic or watercolor palette after we finished painting with the colors.

One of my clay hobbiesis sculpting with leftover clay, you know, when the colors are turning gray, brownish; and it is also a great way to actually recycle the wasted polymer clay.

So in the beginning of this process there aren't any color choices only form and you do not have to keep your hands neat and clean, so this is fun!
After the miniaturesare cured and cool down I paint them with several layers of white acrylic paint as abase color and after that the real color party begins :) but this I will share with you inan upcoming post.
I thought that thesepictures are the best way to symbolize snowy white Christmas so....

New Stickers !

Yesterday it was "Stickers day", well more like "printing day"; I've designed some new stickers that goes on the envelopes. Basically I am creating a total look to my shop and that includes all the stuff that wraps the goods.

These framed stickers are for clients addresses and I have a small one for mine too, and some more cute stuff that goes inside the goods and only my clients can see them (wink wink).

From millefiori to textile.

Can you see mymillefiori canes?

Recently Iwas occupied with a great project of home textile design. Friends of mine fromthe textile industry have been asking me for some time to translate my polymerclay work to textile and design a series of tablecloth collection. I must saythat this was a challenge for me because there are some ground rules that I hadto follow; one of them is to use only 5 colors, not 6, not 7, only five! Well…this rule did not stop me :-)

Textiledesign is very dear to me because for many years I worked as a fashion designerand I love all that is connected to fabric and such, so this opportunity wasvery exiting for me.

There willbe a few more months until this project will launch and whenever there will benews I will be happy to share them with you, but for now I will share a few designsfrom this collection.

Last days of summer

It isgetting a bit chilly in the evenings these days, but it is still very warm andkind of summery here. So it is afantastic opportunity to say farewell to these last summer days and to introducea new collection of hair pins sets for girls or girls at heart.

I used 3 hairpins in each set; on one of them I've attached a slice of millefiori flowercane, on the second I've made a little cabochon and glued it in a lace settingand the third pin got a flower applique.

BecauseI am pro recycling, I've made the wrapping my self from last year calendar; I usedwide stripes from the frame of this very colorful calendar and it was a greatsolution to attach every set together.

Thissummer I've added some shelves to my kitchen; in this close up there are somevintage items, one of them is a romantic round tin box that my grandmother gave me,and it is most dear to me :)

Flower girl - Summer cane collection

Every season - summer/winter - I choose a subject that will be the main theme to that season. This summer 2011 I called the main theme "Free Love". I think what I want this summer to emphasize is a great happiness and joy feelings, free in spirit.

The general collection is divided to several smaller collections. The canes and their color palette are designed mostly for their future purpose - the accessories I'm going to make with them. However, their main spirit is still influenced from the main theme.

Canes from scraps - Part 2

Remember the "Canes from scraps - Part 1" post?

Those canes look simple and not so exiting, aren’t they? But they have inspired me for this 2 colors combinations - after using them as a background surface - I've gathered a bunch of flower canes on them and I used this surfaces for making lovely and exiting barrettes …………….and this is why I love canes from scraps :)

A sweet and happy combination; Pink, yellow, green, turquoise and white flowers

on the stripy cane surface.

Exhilarating but deep combination; Blue, turquoise, green and pink on the blue-green kaleidoscope cane.

Jerusalem and me

This week I was in Jerusalem and visited my big and sweet family; it was so exiting to meet everyone, to be together, to catch up on stuff and basically to enjoy our time. In one of the mornings, my dear father took me to "Mahane Yehuda" market, which is a big, beautiful and genuine market; he couldn’t find something more suitable for me than this, I love it!

Enjoy the richness; it is heaven!

Halva is solid and sweet food that is based on vegetable fat and sugar. Israel popular Halva is made out from raw grinding sesame oil. The word "Halva" is from Arabic and means "candy" or "sweet".

It is delicious!

Color Me Black - Cane Collection DIY Kit

It was very special for me to combine color with BLACK.

Almost all the way I was not sure that I can relate to this dark color, so it took me a little longer to complete this collection and I am very satisfied with the total look, I see it is as if the BLACK is shining through the colors.

These colors & Black are suited to a wide range of products; I chose to make barrettes, pendants and rings. Next time I will make magnets, I think it will go great with this collection

as well.

Yay !!!

Introducing my first official tutorial,

published in the new "GREEN" issue of "From Polymer to Art".

The tutorial name is "Washi paper kaleidoscope cane", six pages, very detailed instructions and pictures.

I have designed a kaleidoscope cane, green of course, and I chose something that will look organic and natural. At first I called it "Fleur-de-lis", but after I've combined the cane slices into a complete surface, it reminded me of a Washi paper design, and thus its name.

Vintage Me

Once upon a time... about 25 years ago, in the midst 80' I met this fabulous material that came in little blocks of color and its name was FIMO aka Polymer clay Fimo brand. At that time, there was very little information to learn from, but I did have 2 booklets and one Japanese book that gave me ideas and inspiration, and they are safe & sound with me until today. Sculpting miniatures was the main issue for me, especially miniature flowers, animals & creatures.

Back then it was "trendy" to make little round pictures with a flower bouquet,

this was my first try:

I keep these precious ones in a vintage tin from my grandma, these two are brooches, and the metal bases are amazingly crafted and in excellent quality.

Fresh Summer Meadow Flowers

I am experimenting new colors combination. No pinks or blue turquoise, but still, it is very intriguing for me. I used flower canes from my summer collection, plus another, a kaleidoscope cane, it gives the base color and you can see it here and there.

They are going to be magnets, and for me the color combination brightness is a bit 70s'; although the combination is not soft, I like it and it is harmonious.

I was asking my FB friends for their opinion on this combination. Most of them loved it very much. Some of them, as I suspected wrote me that it is not my usual color scheme, and they are right of course :) but it is still harmonious combination for their taste. I loved that some of them noted that these colors are natural, they appear in nature near each other, they looks very fresh and you can feel while looking as if you are in a summer meadow.

Color Me Black

Some colors are clearly my favorites in all of their hues and shades. If you are already familiar with my work, it's very clear that I cannot run away from Pinks (yeah), preferably hot Magenta (yay), light Blue & Turquoise (ohh yeah), Greens (smashing), Orange (mmm delish) and Gold (totally). I use and mix them most of the time. In each collection, canes and then products, I take one color and make it as the main player, and the others are combined to enhance the main actor.

I almost avoid some other colors, but I do use them from time to time very carefully, one of them is The Black!

However, from time to time there is a color that stimulates and intrigues me and this season I use the Black as a base color for many strong and/or bright different colors, so they can rise and shine from the blackness.

From my point of view, if you don't use the black just right, the outcome might be stifle and heavy for the eyes and heart, so one of the solutions is to combine it with White - the contrast between clean Black & clean White is a win-win situation.

Watercolor Mosaic Tutorial

On my first days on Flickr I met a sweet girl from Brazil, Monica Gerard, and she taught me an amazing polymer clay technique - The Watercolor Mosaic. It was back in 2005. After I tried it I was fascinated by this technique and I made a tutorial in Hebrew. I'm very happy to share it with you now :) enjoy!

The Watercolor Mosaic Technique

This technique based on the use of transparent polymer clay, Fimo brand, combined with white and black color. Very easy method, but you need to know how to make a Skinner blend with three colors.

You will need:

Polymer Clay -

3 transparent colors

Black, White, Gold

A4 printer paper

Pasta machine

Roller

Cutters

Step 1

We will start with transparent clay.

Make a Skinner blend with 3 colors, a quarter of a package for each color.

Note that a new color is created between 2 color shades. Think about colors that will appear - they will be a part of the Skinner blend outcome.

Step 2

When the Skinner blend is done - finish it on the thickest setting of the pasta machine.

Step 3

Now over to the black and white - not transparent - the regular clay.

Three stripes to half of package from each color.

Step 4

Make equal size sheets that will match the size of the transparent Skinner blend colors; you will have to use for that a thinner setting.

Step 5

Here is the order to place the sheets:

Top - transparent Skinner blend

Middle - white

Bottom - black

Step 6

Here is a look from the side.

Step 7

Roll them all together with the thickest past machine setting.

Then roll it a second time with a thinner setting, I use no 4 in my pasta machine.

Divide the long sheet in to two shorter ones for more comfortable use.

Step 8
Now an important recommendation -

Place them for a whole day (or even for a few hours) on A4 printer paper, on their down black side only, to absorb the polymer grease - and this is because of the next step.

Step 9

Here is the gimmick -

Take one sheet, rip and tear it to unplanned pieces, they can be very small or big pieces, but do a variety of sizes.

When you cut it, the 2 lower layers - black & white - will appear, and this will create the "ripped" look .

Step 10

Preparing the surface -

Here I've used a quarter package of gold clay.

(Metallic color was recommended to me - if it's for a jewel).

Prepare a thick sheet - with a roller or with the thickest width of the pasta machine.

Covering vessels, tableware & dishes:

Carry on doing this from this step, like the explanation from the next steps.

You will not need the gold clay as a surface; the vessel will replace the surface.

Step 11

Start placing the torn pieces on the gold sheet; in the first layer you don’t have to cover all of its surface.

Step 12

Flatten the gold surfaces with the roller.

It will smooth the pieces and will stretch and expand them and the bottom surface too.

Step 13

In the second layering, it is better to use smaller torn pieces.

Add more pieces and scatter them a bit.

Step 14

Flatten again the gold surfaces with the roller.

This is optional - If needed, make a third layer with smaller pieces and roll it again.

Step 15

Now cut with a cutter the shape you want, for example a round pendant or magnets shapes.

Here I've cut out at heart, for an example.

Step 16

Beads can also be created with this technique. Make a scrap bead and cover it with little pieces, role it with your hands and continue with your own making bead techniques.

Fresh Studio Update

There are Some things that you can not run away from… you know what I'm talking about :)) one of them is cleaning & reorganizing your studio. It is only natural to accumulate around you craft supplies, materials, tools and appliances, some important stuff for your daily creative work, most of them you love and cherish. But somehow, although I try to be tidy & organized, well ahhmm… I can't help it and my studio get a bit (wink) messy! In this point you must take a brave decision and do the thing you've ignored from… yes I am talking about cleaning and tiding your work place.

To achieve this goal you need a few things!

First, you need TIME and the next is the most precious ingredient, it is PATIENCE!

When you combine those two together you can start. After you are done, there is a fantastic achievement feeling, you even can take a long smooth breath and your studio is fresh like new, isn’t this a sweet feeling?

It took me about two weeks (yes yes I am slow) to accomplish a major reorganizing but the outcome is worth it.

Before - a glimpse just before I've started

When I reorganized, some of my tools and material are getting a new storage place and I just can not remember where everything is, so I put stickers or little notes or tags on the boxes and drawers so they can be found quick & easy.

I prefer working on a white surface. My true passion is color and combining several shades & tones, so I need to balance that with a white contrast. I work on a Shiny Formica surface.

One of my shelf stands, beads, canes and other stuff boxes.

One of my needs is a light blue color; this color inspires me the most. It is all around me in the shades of the walls.

Recycling is very important!
I use shop gift bags for storage; they are placed on one of the top shelves and it gives the studio a nice neat frame.

Going petite and smiling from ear to ear

There is something very relaxing working on very tiny things, I really do not know why… maybe because it works on my concentration, and I really disappear in it, all my thought are gone, well, it is really therapeutic :)

What can you do with a little, tiny, petite PC cane?

Slice it, bake it and attached it to an ear stud and you get sweet little post earrings that makes you smile from ear to ear :)

Canes from scraps - Part 1

I love to make simple canes especially from scraps.

After I finish working on some canes, I get a load of scrappy ends, so I mix them together and get new colors…. I love that!

So here are 2 simple ones… they look ahhh ahhhm not so shabby… BUT as I say, everything got potential and when the accessories from them are done, I will show you what potential I am talking about.... yeah!

For me they are simply delicious :)

Renovating

These days while summer is, very slowly, changing to autumn I am renovating my little studio for new beginnings. I think that for sometime now my studio just requested that - "please Ronit arrange and clean me…". So now I found the right time for this stage and for starters I'm beginning with the most fragile part in my work - my canes. Most of them are arranged in boxes but on my working table there are many more…. So now I have gathered all of them, and arranging them in new order. I think that the most frustrating thing is to see very small canes that you do not want to use anymore but are still there, just like clothes in your closet…

My blog is being renovated too, so I am still working on its style, but I love the new look, not sure about the header though….

Most of this part, arranging the canes is behind me. My table looks a bit gloomy after I took most of them…

4 years ago, I have discovered Flickr, a wonderful site, just to make a little gallery for myself with my creative work. I did not know the impact it will have on me and on others, Flickr members & viewers.

One of the great Flickr influences on me was when in a complete surprise, 3 years ago, I got an invitation from France to give a workshop there. So, I was invited, 2 years in a row, to give workshops to several groups in France and have made so many and new sweet at heart friends.
